Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with a population over 150 million people, of whom 26% live below the national poverty line. Child malnutrition rates are estimated at around 48%, and The World Bank estimates that Bangladesh is ranked 1st in the world of the number of children suffering from malnutrition.
Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) is currently running programmes to improve the standard of living for people living in Bangladesh. I will be joining one of their programmes in January as part of a placement with International Citizen Service (ICS). ICS works with communities that have specifically requested their help. It also aims to inspire young people in the UK and overseas to become active citizens who are passionate about long term community development.
Once we're in Bangladesh, my fellow ICS volunteers and I will work to help improve the employability skills, knowledge and competence of young people and engage youth in strengthening local government services. I am really excited to start working with VSO and ICS. However, in order to start the placement, I will need to raise at least £800 towards the work of ICS and their partners. The money raised will go towards ensuring ICS can continue sending youth volunteers to the developing world to make a lasting difference in disadvantaged communities.
